On Running Visits Run Reigate Run Club
Wow! It’s getting bigger and more exciting every week and last night, week 4 was no exception – we hit the heady heights of 80+ runners, what a fantastic turnout!
To add to the buzzing atmosphere, our friends at On Running (best running shoes on the planet!) came along to Run Club to let everyone try out and run in a pair of Ons. Our evening started early with the fabulous Marietta from On Running and the team at Simply Sports Reigate, helping fit us all with On trainers for the session. Our lucky winner was announced at the end – congratulations to Matt Loombe who is training for the Run Reigate Half Marathon, he won a fabulous new pair of Ons worth at least £135!
Once again, the training was led by the inspiring and ever energetic team GB Triathlete Cat Doyle from Team Mama. We started with our usual warm up routine then headed straight into slightly longer, complex running drills. These are continuing to help build our strength and stamina. Also, to develop that all so important balance and core muscles – plus a great warm to ensure everyone is warmed up!
Then into the main session, last night was Fartlek style whistle runs. We varied the pace, starting off at either race pace, or just below. Holding that for a few seconds, when the whistle blew we threw in some dynamic strength work (jumping squats, jumping lunges, deep star jumps and those hilarious spotty dogs) just 10-20 of each, then back to race pace. Everyone was brilliant, really pushing themselves hard! We managed to hit 3 sets of whistle runs, and sneakily upped the pace in the last couple of sets to beyond race pace, which was awesome!
No Run Reigate Run Club session would be complete without our 1km timed interval run to end on. Absolutely everyone was incredible. Despite the sudden downpour (which was a welcome change to the heat) everyone totally smashed their previous time. Just as importantly, everyone also looked much stronger and confident in their running form.
