Our local hospital charity, SASH Charity (the charity for East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust) has assembled its largest ever team of runners for Run Reigate 2021, with 121 hospital staff, family members and supporters hitting the Run Reigate courses on Sunday 19th September.

As part of our commitment to supporting the local community, Run Series provided 100 free places in the event for NHS staff and supporters, and local hospital staff have jumped at the opportunity to run alongside the local community at this year’s event.

The SASH Charity team includes 22 runners from the East Surrey Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), who having been very much on the frontline of COVID-19 “wanted to do something nice together as a team“ after everything they’ve been through in the last 18months. Their team includes critical care doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, and others.

Alongside the intensive care team are runners from East Surrey and Crawley hospitals including teams from the Acute Medical Unit, Ultrasound, maternity department, and specialist dementia nurse Chris O’Connor, running alongside his daughter who also works at the hospital.

SASH Charity is hoping to raise funds to provide specialist chairs to help hospital staff take intensive care patients outdoors safely for fresh air and daylight, as well as to create a new mural in the intensive care family room which explains how ICU works, to help make the environment feel more welcoming.

Other members of the SASH team are running specifically for the East Surrey Hospital neonatal unit appeal (www.olivesappeal.org) , through which the charity hopes to fund two more state of the art incubators for local babies born prematurely or requiring special care, as well as to enhance overnight facilities for parents of babies in the unit.

Do watch out for the SASH NHS team on the course in their black and orange t-shirts, and if you’d like to support the hospital teams, you can donate now at https://www.justgiving.com/sashcharity, or to specifically support the neonatal unit appeal donate now at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/EastSurreyNeonatal
